Ep. 185 FOLIAGE FUSING FRENZY FOR THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY! Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio! My name is Julie Mazzoni and I will be focusing on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic for the next little while. It is a 36 foot long, 161 square foot mosaic going in a niche on a busy street corner in Dunwoody, GA. I am partnering with mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman. We are using glass and porcelain tile with thinset and silicone. Our substrate is Hardie Backer With Hydro Defense Technology Fiber Cement Waterproof Backer Board. This week I am working on fusing the foliage inclusions for the trees and starting the Y (and I use thinset to adhere the vitreous tile!) 0:54 I kick off the week by adhering the fused foliage at the top of panel 11! (Can you believe I'm already at panel 11???? & Panel 12 is DONE!) I like to adhere the edges first to make sure there is a nice border line. Pretty quickly all the larger pieces are used up. 1:39 I begin to load the kiln. To make the inclusions, I start with straight cut strips and lay down a base layer. Then I criss-cross a top layer and leave a few holes for interest. Once base is down, I cut up large frit bits manually and add two colors on top using tweezers to place each one. Then I VERY carefully carry it to my kiln. 2:44 Kiln load #1 is ready! Great! 2:53 I fit the rest of the pieces in loosely and now it's time to button up this treetop by gluing them all down. 3:23 I realize I need to load the kiln for the treetops in neighboring areas. This time there are three different color ways. 4:02 Kiln load #2 is revealed! I used the paper 8 times!!! Everything looks great! 4:20 I am really motivated to finish the trees! So I place the pieces and get everything adhered in place. I absolutely LOVE this part! The pieces are gorgeous and they feel great in my hands. Look ma - no cuts! 6:01 I'm finally moving the panels around! First I take panel 11 off the table. Then I move panel 10 to the right and bring panel 9 to the table. 7:02 I fix the top of the Y and make the branch a bit wider to fit three rows of glass. 7:39 Oops! I get super distracted seeing all the gorgeous tree foliage finished and have to show how nice it looks shining in the sun! 7:54 I start the outline of the Y with a line of Latricrete 254 Platinum piped in place. Then I smooth it with my mini crowbar tool and add the copper streaked black vitreous glass. I'm using 3/4" tiles cut in half mixed with 3/8" tiles. After I lay a line, I go back and clean up any thinset that has oozed out. 10:22 Recap: I finished ALL the tree tops and outlined the Y! That's Putting It Together, Ep. 185. Thanks for watching.
