Mineñ isemem Andy. J̌yaqşısızmı? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Siberian Tatar language, Ichkin Tatar dialect. The Ichkin Dialect The Ichkin dialect is a Turkic idiom spoken primarily in the Urals, Chelyabinsk, and Kurgan regions of Russia, characterized most notably by its pronunciation of "ts" instead of the common Turkic "ch." While traditionally classified as a branch of the Kazan Tatar dialect, it features a complex linguistic heritage that shares distinct similarities with the Mishar dialect. This dialect evolved through extensive regional contact, absorbing significant linguistic influences from both the Bashkir language and the Tobol-Irtysh dialect of Siberian Tatar. Because speech patterns vary significantly from village to village, it is important to note that the audio samples presented here specifically feature the Ust-Bagaryak sub-dialect. In other areas—particularly among the inhabitants of the eastern villages—the local speech is virtually identical to the Tobol-Irtysh dialect. Ichkin Tatar People and Culture The Ichkin Tatars, also known as Kurgan Tatars, are a subethnic group that migrated to the Trans-Urals following the fall of the Kazan Khanate, establishing settlements along the Ichkina River and historically referring to themselves as "Tatars of the Siberian Road." Their community was forged from a diverse blend of Volga and Siberian Tatars, alongside smaller groups of Bashkirs, Nogais, and Russians. Unlike neighboring nomadic tribes, the Ichkin people cultivated a sedentary lifestyle focused on agriculture, fishing, and trade, while developing a highly literate culture that carefully preserved literary artifacts. They deeply valued education; by the late 19th century, every Ichkin village maintained a mosque and an attached madrassa for boys, while girls were taught to read and write in Old Tatar by female scholars known as Abystays.
