A ceramic chip the size of a stamp might be able to replace the compressor sitting inside every air conditioner on Earth — no refrigerant gas, no moving parts, just electricity.
Researchers from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, working with Japanese electronics maker Murata Manufacturing, published a peer-reviewed study in the journal Science describing an "electrocaloric" heat pump built from stacked ceramic capacitors. Instead of compressing gas the way every AC has since 1902, it heats and cools a solid material just by switching an electric field on and off.
