Chasing Grouse in the Rain with Springer Spaniel | Homeschool Science in the Oregon Cascades

We hiked a steep ridge at 4,000 feet in the Western Oregon Cascades looking for Grouse. Abiqua, our Springer Spaniel, had a nice flush, but bad shooting had us chasing after a single as rain turned to hail. We got soaked. Abbie worked the cover. My 9 year-old, Robert, and I chased birds we never quite found. We came home empty-handed -- and still got a good day in. When the flush and search was over, we slowed down for native Oregon plants turning our hunt into a homeschool science class: grouse habitat, food sources, elevation, weather, and what's actually growing on Cascades ridges in the fall. This is the real version of our family grouse hunt. Not a highlight reel.
