Through Everything, by Peter Gringhuis

Peter sent me this song in Dutch in 2024 and I helped translate it to English. In making the video, I tried to show what life was like before the Industrial Revolution, when people were more dependent on their community for survival. From our modern way of thinking, life was hard. The vast majority of people lived in rural areas and made their living by farming. The pace of life was slow, governed by sunlight, and communities were small and close-knit. People made most of the things they needed themselves. Life expectancy was short with many people not surviving to adulthood because of disease and calamity. When I was a child I was told that in the Industrial Revolution humanity traded a life of constant physical hardship punctuated by moments of communal joy for one of material comfort punctuated by psychological and systemic stress.
