Who really shaped the genetic ancestry of modern Indians? Ancient DNA has revealed that the story of Indian ancestry is far more complex than a single migration, population, or bloodline. Large-scale research involving hundreds of ancient genomes shows that modern South Asian populations formed through multiple waves of ancestry and population mixing over thousands of years. Research has identified major ancestry components related to ancient South Asian hunter-gatherers, Iranian-related populations, and later Steppe pastoralists.
