How do you measure the RPM of a sensorless brushless RC motor? That question led me to build my own RCXplode Optical Motor Analyzer – OMA. This is the first working prototype, designed to measure a brushless motor completely independently from its internal sensor system. With the OMA I can measure: ⚡ RPM ⚡ Maximum RPM ⚡ KV ⚡ Input Voltage For Version 1, RPM is measured optically using a slotted disc and a light barrier. Every revolution generates a pulse, allowing the analyzer to calculate the motor speed in real time. And the first results are extremely promising. Three consecutive tests showed a difference of only 8 RPM in maximum speed. But this is just V1. Version 2 is already under construction, and this time I’m testing a Hall sensor instead of the optical system. The next big question: Optical sensor vs Hall sensor – which one is better? There are also several software upgrades planned to make testing even easier and more repeatable. And of course, development of my larger RC motor dyno continues in parallel. If you have ideas for features or tests you’d like to see with the OMA, let me know in the comments! 👍 Like the video if you enjoy projects like this. 🔔 Subscribe for the next development and testing videos.
