“RISE” is a gothic industrial metal / symphonic black metal Halloween anthem inspired by DC Comics’ Blackest Night — the massive Green Lantern event that transformed decades of death, resurrection, grief, and comic-book history into one enormous superhero zombie apocalypse. Equal parts undead horror and cosmic Armageddon, the song follows the Black Lantern rings as they seek out the dead, command them to RISE, and unleash an army that feeds upon the emotions — and hearts — of the living.
Driven by crushing industrial guitars, thunderous drums, mechanical rhythms, tremolo-picked riffs, sinister orchestration, funeral bells, eerie whispers, massive choirs, ritualistic chanting, and explosive vocals, “RISE” combines the cold brutality of gothic industrial metal with the enormous apocalyptic atmosphere of symphonic black metal. Everything builds around one simple command:
RISE!
There seemed like no better way to finish Scary Podder’s Halloween Party 2026 than by doing a song about actual zombies.
I was absolutely obsessed with Blackest Night when it was originally coming out. I actually had to leave the state during part of the storyline, and I still remember trying to track down a comic shop in upstate New York because there was NO WAY I was going to miss the latest issue just because I was away from home. Thankfully, I found one, kept reading, and the event ultimately did not disappoint.
What made Blackest Night so incredible to me was that it felt like years of Green Lantern storytelling finally exploding into something that engulfed the entire DC Universe. Even better, it reached back through decades of DC history and turned one of superhero comics’ oldest traditions against the heroes themselves.
Characters die. Characters come back. It happens so often in comics that eventually you stop questioning it.
Blackest Night basically asked:
What if death didn't?
What if all those resurrections weren't miracles? What if somebody wanted them back?
That was awesome.
And it was genuinely scary.
The image from the event that has always stuck with me is incredibly simple. A Black Lantern ring would find a corpse or descend toward a grave, and then you would see that one caption:
RISE.
One word meant somebody was coming back — and whatever crawled out of that grave wasn't really the person everyone remembered.
That became the foundation of this song.
The Black Lanterns weren't frightening simply because they were undead. They could see the emotions of the living and deliberately manipulate them. Love, rage, fear, hope, compassion, greed and will became vulnerabilities. They used familiar faces and painful memories to provoke their victims before tearing out their hearts, with each heart pushing the Black Lantern battery another 0.1% toward full power.
And behind everything was Nekron, Lord of the Unliving.
His plan took the revolving door between life and death in superhero comics and made it terrifying. All those heroes who had died and somehow returned over the years had escaped something they were never supposed to escape.
Nekron intended to correct that.
Death had come to collect.
The Black Lantern oath also had to become a major part of the song. Surrounded by choirs, industrial rhythms, funeral bells, whispers, and symphonic black metal intensity, it becomes a ritual announcing that the Blackest Night has finally arrived.
And as the dead continue to rise, the battery keeps climbing.
99.7%...
99.8%...
99.9%...
RISE.
So for the grand finale of Scary Podder’s Halloween Party 2026, the graves are opening, the rings are searching, the dead are walking, the battery is charging, and Nekron is waiting.
Happy Halloween.
The concept, lyrics, tone, and direction of the song were all chosen by me as part of my mission to explore the DC Universe through music here on Scary Podder.
