How the M16 Quad .50 Became a Ground Weapon in the Battle of the Bulge

In December 1944, American troops fighting through the frozen Ardennes turned an anti-aircraft weapon toward an enemy it was never designed to face. The M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage carried the electrically powered M45 Quadmount with four M2 .50 caliber machine guns, originally intended to defend U.S. columns from low-flying aircraft. During the Battle of the Bulge, however, these half-tracks were pushed into ground combat, where their concentrated fire could suppress infantry, tear into defensive positions, and support troops pinned down without tanks or artillery.
