On 2 December 1935 King George V called off the State Opening of Parliament, the day before it was due. The seating was already up. The reason lay in a house in Buckinghamshire, where his sister was dying. Princess Victoria, the second daughter of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, had been in the newspapers for sixty-seven years, nearly always beside someone more famous. The family called her Toria.
She never married. She stayed at her mother's side through two reigns: Sandringham and Marlborough House, Copenhagen and the royal yacht, a brother's death in 1892 and a father's in 1910, the first Alexandra Rose Day, a war, and a mother's long decline. She took photographs that filled forty albums the public never saw. Only after her mother died, at fifty-seven, did she take a house of her own, at Iver, where musician friends came to play with her on Sundays, and took her to concerts where none of the audience knew who she was.
A full-length documentary told from the documented record: the London Gazette, Hansard, The Illustrated London News, The New York Times, the Daily Mirror and other contemporary papers, the Royal Collection Trust, and the published letters and diaries of her family as quoted in the standard biographies. Where accounts conflict, the narration says so. Stories about her romances are reported only as the press claims they were.
