32 original songs. Overdriven guitar through a cranked valve amp, slapped upright bass right out front, and a stripped-down kit hit with punk energy. No piano anywhere on this record. That was on purpose. ▶ IT NEVER DIED. IT JUST GOT LOUDER. They keep writing that rock and roll finished in 1959. Somebody forgot to tell the kids in London. Twenty years later, in a back room off a high street, people who had not been alive when any of those records came out counted it in again — and played it faster, and played it through amplifiers turned past where they were meant to go. That is not nostalgia. Nostalgia is when you were there. Not one person in that room was there. They found the records in second-hand shops for ten pence, learned them off scratches and jumps, got half of it wrong, and the wrong half turned into something new. Then somebody stood in the doorway and told them they had no right to it — hadn't been there, wrong decade, wrong country, wrong everything. Neither had he. Nobody was there. That is what a record is for. ▶ THE ONE TO LISTEN TO Track 25 — "A Record From Before I Was Born." It was made in a room I will never stand in, in a year I did not live through, by people who are mostly gone now, and none of them were thinking about me. And I put it on, and it was mine. There are people who say you had to have been there. Ask them how much of what they love they were actually there for. It was going to sit in that box forever, and I picked it up. ▶ TRACKLIST 00:00 Ruby & the Second Wave 01:49 Nineteen Eighty, Not Fifty-Six 03:50 Found It in a Bin for Ten Pence 05:38 Nobody Else at School Liked It 07:32 The Wrong Decade to Love This 10:35 We Learned It Off a Scratched Record 13:01 Turn It Past Where It's Meant to Go 15:01 The Bass Is the Lead Now 17:03 Slap It Till the Strings Give Out 18:41 Distortion Wasn't Cheating 20:19 One Bass Drum and a Snare 22:08 The Tape I Wore Out 24:46 We Didn't Cover It, We Took It 26:29 It Never Died, It Just Got Louder 28:23 Quiff, Cuffs and Steel Toecaps 30:02 The Back Room of a Pub 32:01 Everybody Made Their Own Clothes 34:04 They Laughed at the Trousers 36:12 Sunday Afternoon, Fifty People 39:15 The Van Broke Down Again 41:01 You Weren't There Either 42:49 Purists Never Started Anything 45:06 I Don't Owe It an Apology 47:02 The Originals Would Have Loved This 48:50 A Record From Before I Was Born 51:58 Nobody Owns a Backbeat 54:09 Somebody Younger Is Listening 55:53 Teach It Wrong, It Still Works 57:35 Second Wave, Third Wave, Keep Counting 59:28 Still Standing at the Front 1:01:41 Coil the Leads, Load the Van 1:03:46 Hand It to the Next One ▶ GOOD FOR Working · driving · the gym · loading the van · anybody who found the thing that got them by accident, in the wrong decade, on their own 🎵 All 32 songs are original — music and lyrics written for this record.
