Twelve miles out of Sioux City, a log house on the old Sioux City to Fort Randall military road fed travelers, stabled their horses, and handed the French Settlement its mail. South Dakota Marker #398 and the federal record say the Willow post office stood right here, at the Twelve Mile House, from August 1861. But Jefferson's own history book says Willow was two miles north, at the Fourteen Mile House. Two houses, two records, and they disagree.
And in 1869 this post office got a name found nowhere else on earth: Adelescat. The only explanation ever printed is a folk tale about a girl and her lost cat.
Season 2, Episode 8 of South Dakota Mystery Hunters, with Joshua and Lisa. Historical markers in South Dakota, one marker at a time.
