Opened in the late 1960s, Concord Mall has been part of Delaware history for generations. In August 2026, its owners filed plans with New Castle County that could lead to the demolition of most of the enclosed mall. Today, walking through Concord Mall feels like stepping into a time capsule. Once-busy corridors are now eerily quiet. Stores have been emptied and closed forever. The iconic Sears department store that anchored the mall for decades sits shuttered. Old storefronts, dormant fountains, faded signs, empty massage chairs, untouched candy machines and even payphones remain as reminders of another era. On this walk, you'll see the original mall directory, the closed Sears and Spencer's storefronts, the old Sprint kiosk, glass ceilings above the dormant fountains and the historic Strawbridge & Clothier "Seal of Confidence" near Macy's. A handful of businesses are still hanging on. Foot Locker, Famous Footwear, Kay Jewelers, Victoria's Secret, Lids, Champs Sports, Macy's and Boscov's remain open, often with almost no customers in sight. Longtime local favorite Cafe Riviera is still serving pizza, while China Express continues operating in the food court. Chick-fil-A is one of the few places where you'll actually find a small lunchtime crowd. Elsewhere, Coffee Beanery and Claire's are closed, while the former Piazza Italian Eatery sits vacant after feeding generations of Concord Mall shoppers. Even a Spirit Halloween occupies part of this increasingly empty mall. Every so often, someone quietly walks through the corridors, perhaps remembering what this place was like when it was packed with shoppers. Concord Mall is on its last legs.
