Debela Peč is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Triglav National Park. The hike is located on the Pokljuka Plateau in Slovenia's Julian Alps. If you're looking for one of the best day hikes in the Slovenian Alps, this might be it! The Debela Peč trail offers panoramic views of Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia, as well as the surrounding peaks of the Julian Alps. Thanks to its easy access from Bled, Debela Peč is one of the best hikes for anyone visiting Triglav National Park.
📍 Debela Peč
• Starting point: Medvedova Konta car park (off road)
• Starting elevation: 1,410 m
• Highest point: 2,014 m
• Elevation gain: ±600 m
• Distance: 8.7 km out and back
• Time: ~4 hours (return)
• Path type: forest trail, mountain path
• Mountain hut: Blejska koča na Lipanci (Bled Hut)
Let’s hike to the Debela Peč (2,014 m), which is in my opinion one of the most rewarding viewpoints in Triglav National Park. The trail starts at Medvedova Konta on the Pokljuka Plateau. From the parking lot you'll gradually climbs through the forest before reaching Planina Lipanca, home to the Blejska koča na Lipanci. From there, the route continues across the Lipanca Ridge towards the Debela peak.
From the top you'll get to enjoy one of the best panoramic views in the Julian Alps. On a clear day you can see Triglav, the peaks above the Krma Valley, the Karawanks (Karavanke) mountain range, Planina Lipanca and the Zajavornik Plateau. It’s only a short drive from Bled, so ideal as a day trip into the Slovenian alps.
If you're exploring Slovenia and searching for the best hikes in Triglav National Park, Pokljuka, or the Julian Alps, Debela Peč is a hike I couldn’t recommend enough. It's suitable for most hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.
As always, mountain conditions can change quickly. Check the weather forecast before you go and keep in mind that thunderstorms are common during the Summer months. Wear suitable hiking footwear, bring enough water, and don't forget an extra layer as it gets windy up top.
