In 1998, Take-Two bought a struggling games label for about $14.2 million in stock. Inside that deal was a top-down crime game with "potential" — Grand Theft Auto. Today the franchise is estimated to be worth more than $20 billion.
But here's the part the mythology skips: GTA sells rebellion — and GTA is owned by the system. Rockstar feels independent. Legally, it was always part of a public company. Creative control and ownership were never the same thing.
Dr. Giggle follows the money from the 1998 deal, to the Houser brothers, to the producer who helped build the machine and — according to his lawsuit — came back to a key card that no longer worked.
So next time someone tells you GTA is Rockstar's empire, ask one question: who actually owns it? Then ask what happened to the people who built it.
That's the money. Now you know.
A note on the facts: Leslie Benzies' claims were made in a lawsuit and disputed by Rockstar/Take-Two; the case was settled confidentially. The $20B+ figure is an estimate, not an audited valuation. Reporting on crunch and the 2025 firings reflects claims from both sides.
If this changed how you see GTA, subscribe — Dr. Giggle is following the money behind everything you already care about.
