Diane Morgan Discovers Her German Connections | Season 21 Episode 6 | Who Do You Think You Are

Actor, writer and comedian Diane Morgan, best known as the brilliantly clueless historian Philomena Cunk, sets out on a very personal investigation as she uncovers the secrets of her family history. Morgan, who recently created and starred in the BBC comedy #AnnDroid, turns her investigative skills on her own past. Her father died six years ago, leaving behind a family tree they had started together, but with plenty of mysteries still to solve, including the stories of ‘German Charlie’ and her Scottish ancestors. Diane begins by investigating her great-great-aunt Sarah Jane, known as Jinny, and her fiancé Albert Dugdale, who was killed in the First World War. A death penny commemorating Albert was passed down through Diane’s family, and she hopes to return it to one of his living relatives. With her mum Eirwen, Diane explores the family archive before travelling to Bolton, where historian Michala Hulme reveals that Jinny and Albert likely worked at a local mill producing Burberry trench coats. Diane also discovers that their former home in Farnworth was just across the road from where she grew up. Diane then explores her Scottish roots in Dumfries, discovering that her four-times great-grandmother Isabella Hope had five children by four different men and successfully took the fathers to court for financial support. Isabella later died during a cholera outbreak in 1848 and was buried in a mass grave. The mystery of ‘German Charlie’ takes Diane to Mönchengladbach and Hagen, where she discovers that her ancestor Charles, or Carl Anton Fenett, married Elizabeth and had children in Germany before the family eventually returned to Manchester. Finally, Diane meets John Dugdale, Albert’s nephew, who has visited Albert’s grave in France. Diane gives him the death penny, believing it is what Jinny would have wanted. From #PhilomenaCunk to Ann Droid, Diane Morgan is used to investigating the bizarre and the unknown.
