WHEN THE EARTH BEGAN TO RUN The Night of the Stampede The prairie was quiet. Two thousand longhorns lay beneath a pale moon while two night riders made their rounds. A distant storm moved across the western sky. The herd barely stirred. Then every animal stood at once. Noses lifted into the wind. A night horse went rigid beneath the saddle. Horn tips caught the first flashes of lightning. And then the sky broke open. WHEN THE EARTH BEGAN TO RUN is a cinematic Western Country story about a nighttime cattle stampede on the old trail north from Texas toward Kansas. One lightning strike turns a sleeping herd into a moving wall of horns, mud and thunder. Two thousand hooves pound the prairie. Rain cuts sideways through the darkness. The riders can barely see the ground beneath their horses. There is no time to outrun the herd. The only chance is to reach the leaders. “Get round ’em!” The cowboys ride across the front of the stampede, slowly bending the herd into a wide circle, then pulling that circle tighter until the deadly forward rush finally begins to lose its power. By sunrise, the storm has passed. The cattle are breathing again. The horses are covered in mud. The riders are exhausted. Nobody talks much about courage. They are simply glad to still be there. Musically, WHEN THE EARTH BEGAN TO RUN is built as a powerful cinematic Western Country song with a deep, weathered male bass-baritone, organic acoustic instrumentation, fiddle, steel guitar and galloping percussion. The arrangement begins quietly beneath the moon, builds toward the approaching storm, then erupts after one sudden natural thunderclap into the full stampede. At its heart, this is not a song about conquering nature. It is about what happens when the prairie becomes bigger, faster and more dangerous than any man riding across it. Forty years later, one sound still brings that night back. Thunder rolling across West Texas. And the memory of the night...
