As far as Shakespeare's tragedies go, King Lear is probably one of the most sad and gruesome, loosely inspired by the mythological Celtic king, Leir of Britain. Other versions of this story had happier endings, where Cordelia survived and Lear was restored to his throne, but Shakespeare chose a much darker twist, which might be why it remains one of his most popular plays. It explores universal themes of family, conflict and power which are still relevant to this day, and is a must read (or watch) for any Shakespeare fan!
