Hakone is one of Tokyo's best-known escapes, famous for hot springs, ryokan, food and sightseeing. This time, I wanted to know what would remain after the restaurants closed, the buses left and the tourist routes ended.
I pitched my tent near Togendai by Lake Ashi. Over two days, I walked the quiet western shore, crossed the summer grasslands of Sengokuhara, and followed the trail from Mt. Kintoki through Otome Pass toward the lake. There was a glowing sunset, a quiet sunrise, clear sky, strong wind and heavy rain. None of them were interruptions; they were nature itself.
Life shrank to a tent, a backpack, a few simple meals and the road ahead. I had less comfort, yet I felt completely relaxed. Hiking and camping were not the cure by themselves. They simply moved the noise of city life, social expectations and manufactured desire aside long enough for nature to enter my senses again.
I found no new answer in Hakone. I was simply quiet for two days—and sometimes that is enough to feel whole again.
