Pratapgad is known to be a mountain fort situated in Satara district, in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra. The fort is located 24 kilometres from Mahabaleshwar hill station and is a well known tourist destination.
The fort's historical significance is because of the Battle of Pratapgad, which took place on 10 November 1659, between Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Bijapur Sultanate general Afzal Khan.
The great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj assigned Moropant Trimbak Pingle, his prime minister, in order to undertake the construction of this fort for defending the banks of the Nira and the Koyna rivers, as well as to defend the Par pass. It was fully completed in 1656.
The Battle of Pratapgad between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, who was a general of Adil Shahi dynasty, was fought below this enormous fort on 10 November 1659. This was known to be the first major test of the army of fledgling kingdom, and it actually set the stage of the establishment of the Maratha empire.
Pratapgad continued to get involved in regional politics. Sakharam Bapu Bokil, who was a well-known minister of Pune, was confined by his rival Nana Phadnis in Pratapgad in the year 1778. He was later moved from fort to fort till he died at Raigad near Pune. In the year 1796, Nana Phadnis, while he was escaping from the intrigues of Daulatrao Shinde and his minister Baloba, assembled a huge garrison in Pratapgad before he headed to Mahad. In the year 1818, as part of the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Pratapgad was finally surrendered to the East India company.
Pratapgad fort is situated at 15 km (10 miles) from Poladpur and 23 km (15 miles) west of Mahabaleshwar, which is known to be a popular hill station of Maharashtra. The Pratapgad fort stands tall at 1080 metres (3543') above sea level and is constructed on a spur which overlooks the road between the villages of Par and Kinesvar.
The Pratapgad fort has a Tulja Bhawani temple from the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It has a murti of goddess Bhawani, with eight hands (Marathi : Ashtbhuja). Not only that but weapons of soldiers are also on display outside this temple.
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation provides regular bus service to this fort. There are a number of small shops, restaurants as well as a handicrafts store. A lot of schools regularly arrange educational trips to the fort. The fort is also known for many trekking routes of the area.
The fort has a huge bronze equestrian statue of Shivaji Maharaj. It was unveiled by Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India on 30 November 1957. In the same year a road was built by the Public Works Department from Kumbhrosi village up to Pratapgad fort. A guest house and a small park was constructed inside the fort in the year 1960.
