Reading Paul Selig's Divine Union, Tami Simon found herself lifted into a different frequency, feeling the atmosphere of what the guides call the upper room, that place free of fear and separation. Then she closed the book and came back, and was not sure whether anything had actually changed or whether she had simply visited somewhere and returned. It is a question anyone who has been to a retreat or finished a powerful book will recognise, and Paul's answer is refreshingly unromantic.
The guides work through attunements, which they call claims of truth, and once you have been attuned you are holding that seed in the energetic field. But how a person aligns to it, he says, is the process. This is not magic or abracadabra, and he would not trust it if it were. He would not trust someone waving a crystal over his head and pronouncing him finished. His own experience is that the high moments of channeling are followed by a rather uncomfortable process of clearing whatever has been standing in the way of that knowing. It is not all rainbows and unicorns in this work at all. He admits he sometimes wishes his guides simply explained how to make more money and find a better apartment, but that is not the teaching.
What the guides tell people leaving a workshop is memorably ordinary: you are going home, and the dishes you left in the sink are still there, and so is the unpaid bill. Do you attend to those things with this higher awareness, or do you just return to what you had? We live, they say, in a kind of museum, surrounded by things named by the people who came before us, in constant conversation with inherited ideas and moral tenets simply because we expect them to be there.
As for how to stay in the upper room, Paul is honest that he does not entirely know. What he does understand is that a part of us is always already there, and learning to align at that level is the work. One simple way to maintain it is not to take actions rooted in fear, because the action of fear is to claim more fear, and every choice made in fear brings more of the same. And he closes with something he has carried since his late twenties, a three-day experience of grace in which his heart felt on fire and everyone seemed exactly where they needed to be. He thought he had arrived. Then it was gone. What remained was the knowledge that it is real, that a part of him is still there and remembers, and that the memory itself is part of what carries us forward. We simply have to align to it again.
