In October 2026, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit Panama, only about 10 kilometres (6 miles) underground. Over the Panama Canal 🚢, the deck of the Centennial Bridge 🌉 slid back and forth over its supports. It came within inches of getting stuck. 😬

🔍 In this video, I look at what happened under that deck:
➡️ Why a cable-stayed bridge reacts so differently from a building
➡️ Why the deck is designed to slide
➡️ What would have happened if it couldn't slide anymore
🏨 We also look at the Hotel Dos Continentes in Penonomé, where part of the building came down, and a cathedral ⛪ that lost one of its towers.
