If Jesus Honored Parents, Why Did He Say “Let the Dead Bury the Dead”?

Jesus’ words “Let the dead bury their own dead” can sound shockingly harsh. A man asks to bury his father, and Jesus answers, “Follow me.” Was he rejecting family duty — or is the passage doing something deeper? In this Bible study, we compare Matthew 8:21–22 and Luke 9:59–62, look at what burial meant in the Jewish world of the first century, and examine the three major ways interpreters have understood the man’s request: an immediate burial, an indefinite wait until his father died, or the later practice of secondary burial. We also look at Luke’s repeated word “first,” Jesus’ command to proclaim the Kingdom of God, the road to Jerusalem, and the striking connection with Elijah, Elisha, and the plow. The goal is not to invent a hidden custom that makes a difficult verse easy.
