Kayaking on Blue Rock Lake and the Tanjil River

Just under a 2-hour drive from the centre of Melbourne is Blue Rock Lake, with access to the pretty Tanjil River. The main boat launch area has a boat ramp and a pier, making it easy to launch a kayak or canoe. From the launching area, paddle straight ahead across the lake. It is approximately 2 km across to the more sheltered sections of the lake, paddling amongst tree trunks that still stand after the lake's 1984 flooding. Continue paddling until you join the Tanjil River, which narrows and is surrounded on both sides by dense forest. A few opportunities are possible to land and stretch your legs along the way. I laughed at the sight of a 'Nooj Pub' sticker adorning the back of what appears to be a road sign, plonked near the water's edge with no visible access.
