Tonight, fall asleep inside a Gilded Age mansion on Fifth Avenue in the 1890s, a house of forty rooms kept running by around 30 servants you were never meant to see. Upstairs lived a woman worth millions who could not fasten her own dress. Downstairs, a French chef paid $100 a month worked over the same coal range as a scullery girl paid $3. A single Paris gown could cost more than a housemaid earned in a whole year, and one famous Gilded Age costume ball was reported to have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. And down in the basement hung a bell board, one small numbered square for every room, that ran the entire house until, one by one, late into the night, the squares went dark. This is a single winter night in that house, from the lamps being lit at dusk to the last servant asleep under the roof.
