“Woh Jo Hum Mein Tum Mein Qarar Tha” — وہ جو ہم میں تم میں قرار تھا is one of the most enduring and emotionally resonant ghazals of Momin Khan Momin (مومن خان مومن). Built around remembrance, lost intimacy, promises, complaints, reconciliation and separation, the ghazal speaks directly to that strange human experience in which a relationship may have ended long ago, yet its smallest moments remain vividly alive in memory.
Its unforgettable refrain -
تمہیں یاد ہو کہ نہ یاد ہو
Tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho
gives the ghazal its extraordinary emotional power. Momin remembers everything: affection once received, conversations conducted through glances and gestures, little disagreements, promises of loyalty, moments of closeness and even the habit of becoming upset over seemingly insignificant things. Again and again, he turns toward the beloved with the same haunting question: I remember it all—but do you?
Among its most evocative verses is:
سنو ذکر ہے کئی سال کا، کہ کیا ایک آپ نے وعدہ تھا
سو نباہنے کا تو ذکر کیا، تمہیں یاد ہو کہ نہ یاد ہو
The words “ذکر ہے کئی سال کا” would, many years later, acquire another cultural association through the acclaimed PTV long play Zikr Hai Kai Saal Ka.
The Ghazal and Zikr Hai Kai Saal Ka
In 1995, PTV aired Zikr Hai Kai Saal Ka, written by Dr. Anwar (Enver) Sajjad, directed and produced by Sahira Kazmi, and starring Rahat Kazmi as Sikandar and Atiqa Odho as Neelofer. Momin Khan Momin's poetry became an integral part of the production. The title song was sung by the legendary Nayyara Noor, with Arshad Mahmood credited for the theme music and Momin Khan Momin as lyricist.
The choice could hardly have been more appropriate. The drama tells of two people who had loved one another in the past but whose lives took them in different directions. When they encounter one another again years later, their meeting becomes an exploration not simply of romance, but of memory, regret, marriage, responsibility and the question of what might have been.
That is precisely the emotional territory inhabited by Momin's ghazal.
“Tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho” is not merely a question addressed to a former beloved. It is a journey through a relationship reconstructed from fragments of memory. The poet remembers the promises, tenderness, complaints and intimacy of another time, while never knowing whether those same moments continue to exist in the beloved's memory.
In this presentation by Sukhan-e-Anjum | سخنِ انجم, the ghazal remains at the heart of the experience. The visuals drawn from Zikr Hai Kai Saal Ka have been used as a cinematic accompaniment to Momin's poetry. Scenes of Rahat Kazmi and Atiqa Odho, moments by the sea, solitary expressions, meetings, departures and quiet reflection have been transformed into charcoal-sketch imagery, allowing the visual world of the drama to echo the emotional world of the ghazal.
The charcoal treatment is intentional. Like an old photograph slowly fading with time, charcoal gives these images the quality of memory—something no longer fully present, yet impossible to erase. Faces emerge from shadows; landscapes become recollections; and moments between two people begin to resemble fragments from a life remembered many years later.
The drama therefore serves not as the subject of this video, but as a visual interpretation of Momin's poetry.
At the center remains the ghazal itself:
وہ جو ہم میں تم میں قرار تھا، تمہیں یاد ہو کہ نہ یاد ہو
وہی یعنی وعدہ نباہ کا، تمہیں یاد ہو کہ نہ یاد ہو
Woh jo hum mein tum mein qarar tha, tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho,
Wohi ya‘ni wa‘da nibah ka, tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho.
What makes these words timeless is their simplicity. There is no elaborate accusation and no desperate plea for reunion. Instead, Momin does something far more powerful: he remembers.
And perhaps that is why the poetry remains so affecting nearly two centuries later. Relationships change. People separate. Years pass. Lives move forward. But memory has its own measure of time. Some conversations, some promises, some glances—and some people—remain with us long after everything else has changed.
تمہیں یاد ہو کہ نہ یاد ہو۔۔۔
