How St. Pete’s Rod Wave Turned His Pain Into Platinum

Rod Wave, born Rodarius Marcell Green on August 27, 1998, in Saint Petersburg, Florida, is a rapper and songwriter signed to Alamo Records. He gained recognition with Ghetto Gospel (2019), which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200. Growing up in a financially strained household after his parents' separation, Rod turned to the streets but eventually found his path in music with support from his father. His lyrics, influenced by artists like Tupac, Adele, and Kevin Gates, often explore themes of heartbreak and personal struggles. Rod released his first single, Lane, after receiving recording equipment from his family and launched his career with the Hunger Games mixtape series in 2015. His breakout hit Heart on Ice went viral in 2019, propelling him to stardom. Albums like Pray for Love (2020), Soulfly (2021), and Beautiful Mind (2022) solidified his success, each debuting atop the Billboard 200. His 2023 album Nostalgia also topped the charts, making it his third consecutive number-one release. Known for his soulful voice and emotionally charged storytelling, Rod has charted a top-ten album every year since 2019. In 2024, he released his sixth album, Last Lap, featuring collaborations with Lil Baby and others, debuting at number 2 on the Billboard 200.
