Drawing the same twelve numbers as a line instead of columns adds no figure at all to the data. It adds a claim. Full topic page, with the transcript and the exact book reference: https://prepshorts.com/learn/class-8/... DRAWING THE SAME TWELVE NUMBERS AS COLUMNS AND THEN AS A LINE ADDS NO FIGURE AT ALL TO THE DATA. It adds a CLAIM. Between two marked months the segment asserts that the quantity travelled from one value to the other, passing through everything in between - so the line will tell you a temperature for the middle of March that nobody ever recorded, and it will tell you instantly. The columns gave you two heights and stopped. EVERYTHING ELSE FALLS OUT OF THAT. The claim is only earned when moving along the bottom MEANS something: months have a between and six cities do not, and the test is that shuffling the cities into another order draws a different picture of the same data - if reordering the axis changes the shape, the shape was never a fact. READING ONE YOU DID NOT DRAW TAKES TWO PASSES AND MOST PEOPLE SKIP THE FIRST: what the upright axis measures and in what units, what runs along the bottom, what one interval is worth, what the colours and the marker shapes mean - and only then, what it means. The marker shapes are not decoration; shown without colour they are the only thing keeping two series apart. THE SCALE DECIDES WHAT FLAT LOOKS LIKE. The same coastal year is almost level from nought to forty in tens and dramatic from twenty-eight to thirty-four in twos, and an axis starting at twenty loses a January of nineteen off the bottom altogether. Nothing moved.
