Both the mother of a nation and a feared figure in the anti-apartheid struggle. Winnie Mandela passes away aged 81
Ethiopia's new Prime minister, Abiye Ahmed, promises to push through
Democratic reforms in an effort to end years of unrest.
Both candidates in the race for Sierra Leone's presidential run-off say they're still confident of victory. The counts still underway for ballots cast over the weekend for Julius Maada Bio or Samura Kamara.
Aged 81, South African anti-apartheid activist, Winne Madikezala-Mandela passed away in Johannesburg on Monday. She was the second wife of Nelson Mandela and fought fiercely against white minority rule throughout the years he was imprisoned. She was also, beaten and tortured because of her activism and her treatment at the hands of authorities radicalised her approach to the struggle. She was a complex and controversial woman who represented the many sides of her nation.
We spoke to Päscale Lamche, the director of the documentary Winnie (2017)
she told us that not enough of the public narrative about winnie's life focused on her achievements.
Ethiopia new Prime minister took his oath of office on Monday. Abiye Ahmed is the first Oromo to occupy the post, he's promised to push through democratic reforms in an effort to end three years of unrest largely fuelled by a sense of political marginalisation. In the South of the country violence blamed on the army pushed entire villages of Oromo to cross into Kenya.
