Living in Cambodia on a budget can be surprisingly affordable when you know where locals shop. Today I’m spending just $1.25 (5,000 Cambodian riel) at a local market in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to show you real Cambodia cost of living on food prices and how cheaply you can cook a complete meal at home.
For foreigners thinking about living in Cambodia, retiring in Cambodia, or moving to Cambodia, food is an important part of the cost of living. Shopping at a Cambodian local market can be much cheaper than buying imported groceries from Western supermarkets or eating every meal at restaurants.
In this video, I visit a local market in Siem Reap with only 5,000 riel. I’ll show you what I can buy, how I choose inexpensive ingredients, and how I turn those ingredients into a simple meal in my kitchen at home.
Cambodia has many affordable local markets where Cambodian families buy fresh vegetables, meat, rice, noodles, herbs, fruit, and other everyday ingredients. Foreigners and expats living in Cambodia can also shop at these markets, and learning how locals buy food can help reduce monthly living expenses.
If you’re researching the cost of living in Cambodia, Cambodia food prices, grocery prices in Cambodia, cheap food in Cambodia, or what everyday life in Siem Reap is really like, this video gives you a look at food costs from a Cambodian perspective rather than a tourist perspective.
I was born and raised in Cambodia, and on The Syva Ly Show I share everyday Cambodian life in English. My videos explore living in Cambodia, Cambodian food, local markets, Siem Reap, cost of living, shopping, cooking, and what life in Cambodia is really like for locals and foreigners.
Can 5,000 riel really make a complete meal in Cambodia? Watch until the end to see what I cooked and whether my $1.25 Cambodian market meal was actually worth it.
