Singing Sandra was a force of nature on stage and in life. Always mystical, spiritual and elemental yet comforting and motherly to the young ones in the artform. The song has many references in almost every second line to her large body of work – Die With My Dignity, Nobody Wins A War, Voices From The Ghetto, Ancient Rhythms, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Equaliser, Failure Is Not An Option, Red, White & black and True Colours to name a few. It recalls one of her favourite sayings as well – that she was “not a male basher … just a damn observant rebellious female … without apology” Of course, for Karene and Christophe this tribute was a given but is also deeply personal on many levels. Sandra was Karene’s chief mentor from her youth growing up in the art-form to her emerging as the second female calypso monarch out of the Laventille community … and the cultural exploits of Christophe and Sandra working together have long become legendary.
