Damrak – Once the city's harbour inlet, now the broad street that carries almost every visitor from the station into the old centre. Beurs van Berlage – The former commodity exchange, and a turning point in Dutch architecture: plain brick, no ornament, finished in 1903 when the rest of Europe was still building palaces. Dam Square – The heart of the city, named after the dam on the river Amstel that gave Amsterdam its name. Royal Palace – Built in the seventeenth century as the city hall, at a time when Amsterdam was one of the richest ports in the world. It only became a palace two centuries later. Nieuwe Kerk – The church beside the palace, used for royal inaugurations and, these days, for exhibitions. National Monument – The white column on the Dam, raised in 1956 in memory of the victims of the Second World War. Magna Plaza – Built between 1895 and 1899 as the main post office, it was later converted into a shopping mall. Kalverstraat – The busiest shopping street in the Netherlands, and one of the oldest streets in the city. Begijnensteeg – A narrow alley, easy to walk past, and the only way into the courtyard behind it. Spui – A square that fills with a book market on Fridays and an art market on Sundays. Westerkerk – Completed in 1631. Rembrandt is buried here, in a grave that was never marked. The tower is the tallest in the city. Prinsengracht – The longest of the main canals, and the quietest of the three. The Anne Frank House stands on its western bank. © COPYRIGHT All content published on this channel is protected by copyright.
