Step-by-step construction of the projections of a square prism on a grid sheet, using the first angle method and the change-of-position method. Part of Computer Aided Engineering Drawing (CAED, 25CEDS13). PROBLEM A square prism of base edge 30 mm and axis 60 mm long rests on a base edge on the HP. Its axis is inclined at 40° to the HP and appears inclined at 30° to the VP. Draw its projections. METHOD: THREE STAGES 1. Prism standing on its base, with the resting edge cd perpendicular to the VP. The top view is a 30 mm square; the front view is a 30 × 60 mm rectangle. 2. Tilted about edge cd until the axis makes 40° with the HP, so the base is at 50° to XY. In the new top view, edge cd is hidden (dashed). 3. Turned so that the top view of the axis makes 30° with XY. The final front view is found by projection; the three edges meeting at the rear corner 4 are hidden. Grid: 1 square = 5 mm. The prism is assumed to be 15 mm in front of the VP; this does not change the shape of the views. CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction and problem statement 00:28 Plan: three stages 00:57 Step 1: XY line, prism standing on its base 01:37 Step 2: axis at 40° to HP 02:48 Step 3: axis appears at 30° to VP 03:55 Final projections 04:10 Practice problem PRACTICE Let the same prism rest on a base corner on the HP, with its axis at 45° to the HP and appearing at 30° to the VP.
