In 1931, a fishing trawler called the Colinda hauled up its net twenty-five miles off the coast of Norfolk, and inside a lump of waterlogged peat was a carved antler point — a hunting weapon, made by hand, from a hundred and twenty feet below the surface of the North Sea. There was no boat down there. That peat never fell into the sea — the sea rose over it. It was the ground of a lost country the size of Britain, where thousands of people lived and hunted for thousands of years, until the North Sea swallowed it for good.
