In the winter of eighteen seventy-nine, this county hired a woman to do its washing, and the joke on the courthouse steps was that she was the only woman in Dust Creek any court had ever believed. January, eighteen seventy-nine. Rosa Delgado washes for the Alameda House and takes in bundles from nine households in town, and she has one rule she has never once broken: she carries the clean linen to the door, knocks twice, steps back two steps, and never goes into a room. The hotel is full that week for the January term of the district court, and two men talk in the back parlour directly above the laundry room where she is working late. Through one thickness of pine floorboards she hears a date, a box, and a sum of money, and on the back stairs she picks up a corner of paper that is still warm. The next morning she carries it to the bank and asks whether anybody has lost it. By Friday the hotel has given her washing to another woman, there is a paid stage ticket on the table with a bank envelope under it, and a man on a Bar Seven horse sits in the yard from two o'clock until dark doing nothing at all. Nobody in that county has ever had to be afraid of a laundress, and by the end of January the town has already decided what kind of woman she is. What the town has not decided is what a court does with four sentences that nobody wrote down. The question is not whether she heard something. It is whether the only witness in the county will be allowed to say it out loud. #frontierjustice, #westernaudiostory, #witnessstory, #laundressstory, #historicalfictionaudiobook, #oldweststory, #audiodramaenglish, #smalltownmystery, #storynarratedbyaclerk, #newmexicoterritory1879, #papertrailwestern, #courtroomwesternstory
