Bonds are paying the most in 24 years. On October 1, 2026 the 10-year Treasury touched 5.34%, and a lot of people close to retirement are moving their safe money into bonds right now. Before you do, there is one check that decides whether a bond protects your retirement or quietly drains it.
In this video I follow three neighbors, all 62, each with the same $300,000 of safe money for the eight years before Social Security at 70. Frank buys a long-term Treasury fund for the highest yield. Joe stays in a money market fund. Carol asks one question first: when do I need each dollar back?
What you'll see:
Why a Treasury can be perfectly safe from default and still lose a third of its value (2022: the best-known long Treasury fund lost 31%)
Duration, the dial and the clock inside every bond: a one-point rate rise costs about 11% on a 20-year bond and takes about 12.5 years to heal
Why cash at 3.7% is a bet on rates too, and what it costs when rates fall
The bond ladder: $46,130 a year from 62 to 70 at today's rates, known on the day you buy
Four futures, three neighbors: Frank swings by $73,000, Joe by $28,000, Carol by zero
Inflation and TIPS (2.37% above inflation on 5 years), state tax exemption, IRA vs taxable account, phantom income
The cases where I would not use a ladder at all
Figures checked on October 28, 2026: Federal Reserve H.15 Treasury and TIPS yields (Oct. 26, 2026), FOMC statement of Sept. 16, 2026 (3.75% to 4%), Crane Data money fund index (about 3.7%, mid-October 2026), BLS CPI September 2026 (+3.7%), Bloomberg US Aggregate 2022 (-13%). Rate scenarios are stress tests, not forecasts.
