We build temples for goddesses who cannot speak, and then build rules for women who can. In cinema and in reality, a woman’s identity is frequently decided by everyone except herself. From Satyajit Ray’s Devi (1960) to Rajiv Patil’s Jogwa (2009) and Anvita Dutt’s Bulbbul (2020), this video essay examines how society deifies, demonizes, and controls women. Why are we comfortable with female power inside a religious narrative, but terrified when a real woman asserts her independence, anger, or individual voice? When a woman is turned into an idea, people stop seeing the human being. She is not a symbol. She is not someone's honor. She is not your religious toy. 🎬 MOVIES DISCUSSED ▶️Devi (1960) – Directed by Satyajit Ray ▶️Jogwa (2009) – Directed by Rajiv Patil ▶️Bulbbul (2020) – Directed by Anvita Dutt 💡 POINTS COVERED ▶️Deification vs. Humanity ▶️Institutionalized Tradition ▶️The Myth of the Monster ▶️Societal Contradictions ▶️Right to Self-Determination ⚖️ COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER Copyright Disclaimer under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976: Allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
