Tan Yunxian — The Ming Female Doctor History Erased

In 1510, Chinese physician Tan Yunxian believed she would die soon. Fearing her knowledge would vanish, she finished her book Nüyi Zayan — *Miscellaneous Words of a Woman Physician*. Every single case inside was about women patients. Most official Ming‑era historical texts overlook ordinary women’s pain: grief from polygamy, infertility, miscarriage, chronic menstrual illness, ailments they dared not tell male doctors. Tan Yunxian recorded them all. Popular television drama turned her into a palace‑bound royal figure, but the real‑life Tan Yunxian practiced medicine among common women in Wuxi. Today only one single copy of her book survives in a Beijing library. Without this volume, those thirty‑one women would be completely lost to time.
