Creating A Shantytown Map With Dungeondraft

This video is a follow up to the previous episode on creating encounters outside of a city's walls. I use Dungeondraft mapping software to create a classic shantytown that has sprung up along a drainage ditch outside a walled town. In addition to talking about and demonstrating the various features of Dungeondraft, I also discuss the ways that map creation in D&D is influenced by their usage in the game setting. Players will be moving through your map under the constraints of movement and line of sight, so that the narrow, winding streets of a shantytown create unique dynamics between players and NPC's. I also talk about thinking how the residents of shantytown, who are usually either desperately poor or living "outside the law," organize themselves in regards to each other and the outside world. Since I've divided my map along a drainage ditch that runs from the city, the two sides of town become allied around two separated criminal gangs. I also have a temple of life which is run by a cleric who helps the poor in the city, providing food and purified water for any and all. With one side of the town having easier access to the road and travelers who congregate outside the city gates, this will be the "better" side of the shantytown, which will serve to create adventures and encounters based upon which area the players will choose to visit.
