In front of him, the Jedi High Council has just expelled his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, from the Order and handed her to Admiral Tarkin’s military court, to stand trial for the bombing of the Temple hangar. The court sits at dawn. Yoda’s ears droop with a heavy sorrow. Mace Windu stares back with an unyielding, rigid posture. Anakin: "You are making a mistake. A massive, unforgivable mistake. She is innocent, and you all know it! The trial is a sham. Tarkin already has a firing squad waiting for her. He wants a scapegoat to look strong in front of the Senate, and an army that answers to admirals instead of Jedi." Anakin paces the floor, his boots echoing sharply against the stone. The betrayal burns in his chest, a roaring inferno that threatens to consume the last shreds of his patience. He looks at Obi-Wan, desperate for a lifeline, for his master to stand up and join him, but Obi-Wan, bound by the consensus of the Council, simply looks away, his hand stroking his beard. The realization hits Anakin with the force of a physical blow. They are not going to save her. If Ahsoka is going to live, the Jedi way is no longer the path. Anakin stops pacing. He stands perfectly still, his jaw set, and reaches to his belt. He unclips his comlink and tosses it onto the center of the floor. It clatters loudly in the silent room. Anakin: "If this is what the Jedi Order has become, a political tool that sacrifices its own children to appease bureaucrats, then I want no part of it. I quit." Obi-Wan: "Anakin, wait! Do not let your emotions dictate such a rash decision!" Anakin: "My emotions are the only thing making any sense right now. You abandoned her. I won't." He turns his back on the Jedi High Council and strides out of the chamber. The heavy doors slide shut behind him, sealing away the only life he has known since he was a boy. He does not look back. He does not hesitate. The path ahead is treason, but it is the only one he can stomach. Deep within the Republic military complex, the barracks of the 501st Legion are usually a place of rowdy camaraderie, but tonight, the halls are deathly quiet. Word of Commander Tano’s expulsion and impending military trial has already spread through the ranks. In the main staging area, Captain Rex sits on a metal crate, his helmet resting between his boots. Around him, Jesse, Kix, and Appo stand in tense silence. The doors hiss open, and Anakin steps into the room. He is no longer wearing his Jedi robes; he wears his dark combat tunic, the fabric blending into the shadows of the barracks. Rex stands up immediately, snapping to attention. The others follow suit. Anakin looks at the faces of the men he has bled with, fought with, and survived with. Rex: "General Skywalker. We heard the news about the Commander. The men are… we are furious, sir. It isn’t right." Anakin: "I am not a General anymore, Rex. I just walked out of the Jedi Order. They handed her to Tarkin, and I am not going to let her die in a Republic cell. I am going to break her out. I am going to become a fugitive from the Republic, and if you help me, you will be hunted down right alongside me. I am not ordering you to do this. In fact, as a civilian, I have no authority to order you to do anything. I am asking you, as my brothers." Kix: "I took an oath to save lives, sir. Leaving a kid to be executed after a rigged trial goes against everything I stand for. Commander Tano has pulled this legion out of the fire more times than I can count. The Republic is turning its back on her, but the 501st doesn't abandon its own. I'm in." Rex: "We know the layout of the central detention block better than the Coruscant Guard does. If we hit them fast and hard, they won't even know what happened until we are in hyperspace. The Jedi might have given up on her, Anakin. But we haven't. Tell us the plan." Under the cover of Coruscant’s artificial night, a pair of unmarked LAAT gunships descend rapidly toward the Central Republic Military Penitentiary. The rain falls in heavy, stinging sheets, obscuring the approach of the gunships from the prison’s exterior sensors. Inside the troop bay, Anakin stands shoulder-to-shoulder with thirty of his most trusted men from the 501st. #starwars #starwarswhatif #whatif
