Playing and Singing with the Banjo - An Introduction - Bluegrass

I've had a lot of requests for this. I guess it was time I did something about it... :) One of the most common questions I get from students is: "How do I sing and play at the same time?" It feels like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach, but on a banjo! In this introductory lesson, I’m breaking down the barriers and showing you that you don't have to be a virtuoso to start singing with your instrument. The secret is starting simple. We'll look at why "vamping" is your best friend when you’re first starting out, how to simplify your rolls so they don't fight your vocals, and why choosing the right key is the most important decision you'll make for your voice. In this lesson, we cover: The Foundation of Vamping: Why playing simple chords on the 2 and 4 beats allows your brain to focus on the lyrics. Simplifying Your Rolls: Transitioning from full Scruggs-style rolls to "walking" through the melody while you sing. Finding Your Key: Using a capo to match the banjo's tuning to your natural vocal range. Separating the Tasks: Tips for practicing your vocals and your picking separately before trying to marry them together. Demo: You Are My Sunshine: A practical example of how to move from a simple vamp to a rolling backup while singing.
