Jesus was hungry, and from a distance he saw a fig tree full of leaves. Fig trees are supposed to carry a little early fruit right alongside their leaves — so a tree that green should have had something to offer. It had nothing. And Jesus cursed it, right there, on the spot. That same week, he walked into the temple and said almost the exact same thing to the people worshiping there — plenty of activity, plenty of appearance, but no real fruit underneath it. This message looks closely at that fig tree, and at the parable Jesus told right alongside it about a gardener who begs for one more year for a barren tree before it's cut down. Together they ask a question most of us would rather put off answering: when God asks something of you, right now, today, what do you say back? "Yes" — or "later"? This isn't a message to make you afraid. It's a message to help you stop waiting. Whatever God has been quietly asking of you, a habit to let go of, a person to forgive, a step back toward him, this is for you, today, not next Sunday.
