The Zen Masters on Mind | Bodhidharma, Huineng, Huang Po & the Ten Oxherding Pictures | Audiobook
Twelve centuries of Zen, in the words of its own masters: from Bodhidharma, the Indian monk who brought the teaching to China, through the great Chan masters of the Tang dynasty, to the Zen masters of medieval and early modern Japan.
Here are some of the most treasured texts of the tradition: Faith in Mind (Hsin Hsin Ming), the Song of Enlightenment (Shodoka), teachings from Huineng’s Platform Sutra, the dialogues of Mazu and Shitou, Huang Po’s sermon on the One Mind, and the Ten Oxherding Pictures, the classic map of the path from seeking to awakening, and back into the world.
If you come to these texts from the Upanishads or Advaita Vedanta, you may find them strangely familiar. When Faith in Mind reaches for a word for ultimate reality, it finds only two: “Not two.”
These selections were translated by D. T. Suzuki in his Manual of Zen Buddhism (1935), now in the public domain, and have been lightly adapted for reading aloud. The Platform Sutra and the Mazu and Shitou material are excerpts, as given in Suzuki’s anthology.
