Indian Railways has launched its first train capable of running on liquefied natural gas, or LNG. The eight-coach, non-AC train was flagged off from Sabarmati station in Gujarat and is a modified Diesel Electric Multiple Unit, or DEMU. The train can operate using 40 per cent LNG and 60 per cent diesel, with dedicated fuel controls, LNG storage, gas-leak detection and safety systems. Unlike conventional trains, DEMUs do not use a separate locomotive, making direct replacement with an electric locomotive difficult. The LNG conversion is aimed at reducing diesel consumption while keeping existing DEMU assets operational. Railways plans to convert 10 Driving Power Cars under an existing contract. Two converted DPCs have already completed 2,000-kilometre field trials each, as Railways explores fuel diversification. #indianrailways #lngtrain #lngdemu #demutrain #railwaynews #indianrailway #lngpoweredtrain #railways #sabarmati #dualfueltrain —————————————————————————————————————————— TOI Bharat – Your Window to India And Its Neighbourhood TOI Bharat delivers the latest news, biggest voices, sharpest views and in-depth coverage of India’s political, social and economic landscape.
