Slow, soulful dark blues music about living a life ruled by responsibility, duty, and everything that needs to be done before there is ever time left for yourself.
Obligation to Obligation is an original dark blues song from Dark Blues For The Soul, built around weary male vocals, slow electric guitar, smoky atmosphere, and the quiet exhaustion of a man whose days have become one responsibility after another.
This is one of my favorite songs that we have created so far and I felt like it needed it's own stage. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
LYRICS — OBLIGATION TO OBLIGATION
Wake up early, get the coffee made,
Check what’s due and what still needs paid.
One more promise, one more place to be,
Another little piece taken out of me.
I cross one thing off, two more appear,
Another favor, another gear.
Days ain’t days, they’re a list I’m on,
Living from obligation to obligation.
I’m living from obligation to obligation,
No room left for anticipation.
Just one more duty, one more situation,
One more mile without a destination.
I keep moving like it’s some kind of salvation,
Living from obligation to obligation.
I call who I should, show up where I’m due,
Do what I promised, follow it through.
I keep the birthdays, remember the dates,
Get there on time and rarely complain.
But somewhere between the have-to and must,
The things that I wanted got covered in dust.
I can’t recall the last thing I chose,
Just things that needed doing before I could go.
I’m living from obligation to obligation,
No room left for anticipation.
Just one more duty, one more situation,
One more mile without a destination.
I keep moving like it’s some kind of salvation,
Living from obligation to obligation.
Sunday night I look at the week ahead,
And feel myself tired before I hit bed.
Monday through Friday already feels spent,
Saturday’s spoken for before it begins.
There ain’t much wrong with doing your share,
With being the man who’s always there.
But somewhere a life ought to belong to you,
Not just everything everybody needs you to do.
I want one morning with nowhere to go,
One empty square and nobody to know.
One thing I choose just because I can,
Not because somebody needs it from this man.
I’m living from obligation to obligation,
Running on duty and expectation.
I’ve done my part without hesitation,
But I’m tired of calling this life dedication.
There’s got to be more than constant rotation,
Living from obligation to obligation.
One day I might leave one box unchecked,
Let one small demand wait till the next.
Maybe that’s where I’ll find some liberation,
Beyond obligation to obligation.
