Silverchair is an influential Australian rock band that emerged in 1992 from Newcastle, New South Wales. Initially formed under the name Innocent Criminals, the lineup comprised Daniel Johns (vocals and guitars), Ben Gillies (drums), and Chris Joannou (bass guitar). Their journey to fame kick-started in 1994 when they clinched a national demo competition hosted by the SBS TV show Nomad and Triple J radio. This victory led to their signing with Murmur, marking the beginning of their success both in Australia and internationally, with album sales surpassing 10 million globally. Distinguished by their record-breaking achievements, Silverchair holds the title for the most ARIA Music Awards won by any artist, with 21 victories out of 49 nominations. They have also been honored with six APRA Awards, including three songwriting awards for Johns in 2008. Their studio discography boasts five albums, each debuting at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart: "Frogstomp" (1995), "Freak Show" (1997), "Neon Ballroom" (1999), "Diorama" (2002), and "Young Modern" (2007). The band also scored three number-one singles on the ARIA Singles Chart: "Tomorrow," "Freak," and "Straight Lines." Throughout their career, Silverchair's sound evolved significantly, starting from grunge influences in their early work to incorporating orchestral and art rock elements in their later albums. This evolution showcased the maturation of Johns' songwriting and vocals, alongside the band's increasing musical complexity. Following the release of "Diorama" in 2003, Silverchair took a hiatus, during which members engaged in side projects like the Dissociatives, the Mess Hall, and Tambalane. They briefly reunited for the Wave Aid concerts in 2005 and released "Young Modern" in 2007, followed by the Across the Great Divide tour with Powderfinger. In May 2011, Silverchair announced an indefinite hiatus, marking a pause in their storied career. Watch more TMF videos ► https://bit.ly/MoreTMF Join us.
