Ipoh to Penang by KTM Komuter | Malaysia Train Journey, Butterworth Ferry & George Town Street Food

We travelled on the KTM Komuter from Ipoh to Butterworth, covering 162 km along Malaysia’s West Coast Line. This full journey takes you through the towns, countryside, and landscapes of Perak and Penang, with stops at Sungai Siput, Kuala Kangsar, Taiping, Bagan Serai, Parit Buntar, and Bukit Mertajam. Starting with a short stay in Ipoh, we explored Ipoh Old Town, including Concubine Lane, Birch Memorial Clock Tower, and the Perak State Mosque. We also visited famous cave temples such as Sam Poh Tong, Nam Thean Tong, and Ling Sen Tong, as well as the hidden lake at Tasik Cermin. Ipoh is well known for its local food, including hor fun, chicken with bean sprouts, and dim sum. The KTM Komuter train departs from Ipoh Station and stops at every station along the route, offering a slower but more local travel experience compared to ETS. Along the way, the journey passes rivers, palm oil plantations, rice fields, and historic towns like Taiping, once a major tin mining centre. After arriving at Butterworth, we walked to the ferry terminal and took a short ferry ride across the Penang Strait to George Town. In Penang, we explored the George Town UNESCO World Heritage area, including Fort Cornwallis, the Esplanade, St George’s Church, Armenian Street, and the clan jetties. We also tried some of Penang’s famous street food such as Hokkien Mee, char koay teow, assam laksa, appom manis, and roasted meats.
