The Golden Calf: A Warning for the Church Today (Exodus 32)

Why would people who had just been miraculously delivered by God turn around and worship a golden calf? (It was the very first thing God commanded them never to do.) In Exodus 32 we find one of the most shocking and shameful stories in the entire Bible. Israel had experienced the plagues, crossed the Red Sea, and heard God Himself speak the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. Yet while Moses was still on the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and demanded, “Make us gods who will go before us.” What makes this story especially confronting is this: They thought they were still worshiping the Lord.
