Uncovering Restricted 1,000-Year-Old Smugglers Cellar Beneath UK'S #1 Most Haunted Hotel (Rye)

I Travelled to Rye to investigate the darker side of one of England’s oldest towns. and ended up uncovering stories of smugglers, secret tunnels, and a pub with nearly 900 years of history. At the centre of it all is The Mermaid Inn, a place once linked to the notorious Hawkhurst Gang and now known as one of the most haunted inns in Britain. But I wanted to know how much of Rye’s reputation was actually true. So I explored the old smuggling streets, looked into the tunnels supposedly hidden beneath the town, visited the places connected to Rye’s criminal past and spoke to locals to hear the stories that don’t always make it into the history books.
