Harry Carey was one of the biggest stars of early western movies. Carey senior, not his son, Harry “Dobe” Carey, Jr., who was featured in many John Wayne and John Ford classics. Carey Sr starred in dozens of silent western films and partnered with young filmmaker John Ford for a series of 20 two-reelers featuring Carey as “Cheyenne Harry.” Ford’s first feature film, STRAIGHT SHOOTING (1917) starred Harry Carey and Hoot Gibson.
On screen, Harry Carey’s western character was strong and silent. Like William S. Hart, he usually portrayed a good bad man. Unlike Hart, Carey added more action to his films. They were a mix between Hart’s austere gunman and Tom Mix’s action packed crowd pleasers.
When talkies came in, Carey starred in the jungle adventure TRADER HORN, the biggest hit of M.G.M. After a falling out with the studio, Carey starred in 3 low budget, but action packed, Mascot serials and B westerns for a variety of Poverty Row studios.
Once such film is 1932’s WITHOUT HONOR with Harry Carey, again, as a good bad man. While searching for his Texas Ranger brother’s killer, clearing his name and reuniting a long missing daughter with her mother, Carey redeems himself. The daughter beaten by her alcoholic stepfather. There are not a lot of western cliches in this film and Harry Carey delivers a solid performance. It’s easy to see why young John Wayne looked up to him.
The supporting cast, while mostly unknown today, features several important players. The alcoholic child abuser is played by Gibson Gowland, “McTeague” in the silent classic GREED. The distraught mother is none other than Hal Roach Studios veteran comedienne, Mae Busch. She was Oliver Hardy’s wife in SONS OF THE DESERT and BOHEMIAN GIRL, in addition to being in some of Stan and Babe’s best two reel comedies. Two western veterans can’t be missed. Lafe McKee, with over 350 credits and Tom London, whose tally in films is over 650!
Finishing in the Top 10 Box Office Western stars in 1937 and 1938, Carey, then in his forties, ended his starring roles and became a sought after character actor. For his part as the Senator who befriends James Stewart in Frank Capra’s MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON in 1939, Carey received and Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Carey died in 1947. That year, John Ford dedicated THREE GODFATHERS to Carey, "Bright Star of the early western sky."
